We believe that not all hard drives are equal & that some are definitely more equal than others. A&A supply hard drives from a select few specialist hard drive manufacturers and we tend to specialise in Fujitsu hard drives, Seagate hard drives & Maxtor hard drives.

Of these; we tend to supply IDE & Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives from Maxtor or IDE & Serial ATA hard drives from Seagate for use in standard desktop computers & standard tower computers because of their proven quality, performance & reliability.

Because hard drive specifications frequently change, we monitor these changes on your behalf & will always supply the best hard drive option.

Choosing a Hard Drive for a Desktop or Tower Computer

Desktop computers & tower computer tend to use 3.5" hard drives. There are 3 current types of 3.5" hard drive; IDE hard drives (also referred to as ATA), Serial ATA hard drives and SCSI hard drives. The vast majority of computers use IDE hard drives, but the type of hard drive can be easily checked by opening the computer & checking the cable which connects to the rear of the drive.

Serial ATA (also referred to as SATA) hard drives use a quarter inch wide cable with a half inch wide connector (please refer to the picture of the red cable in the left hand column of this page).

IDE hard drives use a 2 inch wide ribbon cable with a 40pin connector with one pin usually be blanked out (please refer to the picture of the grey cable in the left hand column of this page).

The vast majority of home or small business computers will use IDE hard drives or Serial ATA hard drives & the vast majority of these will be IDE hard drives because IDE hard drives tend to be the most popular & serial ATA hard drives were not commonly available prior to 2003.

SCSI (pronounced "Skuzzy") hard drives use 50pin cables, 68pin cables or 80 pin cables. Due to their extra cost & specialist configuration requirements, SCSI hard drives are more suited to a pure business applications & are mainly used in Servers.

Please note; This is a 3.5" 80gb IDE hard disk drive. This 80gb hard drive has been specially designed for use in desktop computers & tower computers. It can also be used to replace the current or original 3.5" hard drive, & in many cases can be fitted as a secondary (slave hard drive). In most cases, the fitting of a slave hard drive will simply involve screwing the new drive into a spare 3.5" hard drive bay (ensure that the boot hard drive is set to master) & change the jumper4 to slave. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact us.

Some computers cannot see or use the full capacity of an 80gb hard disk drive, or are limited in that they cannot access data from the hard drive at full speed. In these instances, we can supply a separate Ultra ATA133 IDE card which fits into a spare PCI slot. The card would then connect to the new hard drive which would then be able to transfer data at full speed, whilst the computer will see the full 80gb capacity.

 This set of internal data & power leads are only available with a new SATA HDD

These internal SATA Power & Data leads will probably be required if the new SATA Hard Disk Drive is being fitted as an additional unit (rather than a replacement).

These internal SATA Power & Data leads also be required if the new SATA Hard Disk Drive replaces a SATA Hard Disk Drive which uses a standard (4 pin D shape) power socket. Ie; if the new hard drive is intended to replace a SATA hard drive which has a (four pin) D shape power socket, you will need these leads.
